Project Cornerstone is a K-8 program led by the YMCA of Silicon Valley and brought into classrooms by engaged parent volunteers. Project Cornerstone seeks to build empathy, acceptance, confidence, and a growth mindset among students.
At the middle school level, Project Cornerstone’s curriculum focuses on social emotional learning (SEL). Training is provided to volunteers prior to each lesson. Volunteer commitment is approximately 2.5 hours per month, which includes an interactive training via Zoom (also recorded), planning time, and an in-class session. Topics for the 2023-2024 academic year include
Self-Awareness - Defining and managing emotions
Relationships - Social connection, active listening
Stress - Healthy stress, stress effects and management
Me & You - Identity, perspective, discrimination, racism
Why Volunteer?
Project Cornerstone supports the idea that “All kids are our kids.”
Volunteers develop relationships with staff, students, and families that support the mission and vision of the school. These relationships help youth thrive.
Volunteers empower youth by providing opportunities for voice and choice in classrooms and on campus.
Volunteers partner with school staff to create safe and caring spaces for youth to be and belong; to learn about themselves and others; to connect; to explore and discover their interests.
